How to Choose a Dive Shop and Scuba Instructor

Short answer: a trustworthy dive shop is open about who teaches, what's included in the price, and where you'll dive. Its instructors are active, current with their agency, and dive well beyond what they teach. Ask the questions below before you pay a deposit anywhere, including here.

Seven questions to ask any dive shop

  1. Who will actually teach me, and what are their credentials? Ask for the instructor's name and agency number. You can verify that they're active with NAUI, SSI, PADI, or IANTD.
  2. How big are the classes? Smaller groups mean more coaching per student, especially in the pool.
  3. How much pool time is included? Comfort comes from repetition. Rushed pool sessions are a red flag.
  4. Where are the open water dives, and what do they cost? Lake, quarry, or boat? Are boat fees included?
  5. What is the all-in price? Ask about eLearning, rental gear, tanks, weights, boat fees, and certification fees. A low headline price can grow quickly.
  6. What happens if I need more time on a skill? Good instructors would rather add a session than sign off on a skill you haven't mastered.
  7. Is there a community after the course? Clubs, local dives, and trips keep new divers diving.

How Depth Finder's Scuba answers those questions

  • Instructors: Co-owner Brandon Wolters has taught since 2012 and is a NAUI Course Director and Technical Examiner. Co-owner Chris Beeler is a NAUI Instructor and technical diver. Our team teaches NAUI, SSI, and IANTD, from Open Water through cave, CCR, and trimix. Meet the owners.
  • Small groups: more in-water coaching, more feedback, and skills mastered rather than checked off.
  • Open Water format: eLearning first, then about 4 hours of classroom review and 6 hours of pool time, usually over two days, followed by four open water checkout dives over two days. Choose two lake days ($599), or a lake day plus a boat day off Boynton Beach ($699, boat fees included).
  • What's included: eLearning, BCD, regulator, wetsuit, dive computer, tanks, and weights. You bring your own mask, fins, snorkel, and SMB, fitted in the shop. Need a different schedule or location? Custom options are available. Contact us.
  • Veterans: VA GI Bill® authorized. See the Veterans Program.
  • Community: our free monthly dive club meets the first Thursday of every month at 7 PM, and we run group dive trips. Learn about the club.

We've been in Punta Gorda since 2017, an easy drive for divers in Port Charlotte, Cape Coral, Englewood, Babcock Ranch, Fort Myers, Venice, North Port, and North Fort Myers.

Quick answers

Does the certification agency matter?

NAUI, SSI, PADI, and IANTD certifications are all recognized worldwide. The instructor matters more than the logo on the card.

How do I know if an instructor is good?

Look for an instructor who still dives actively, explains why a skill matters (not just how to do it), and will hold you back until you're ready. Reviews that mention specific instructors by name are a good sign.
