Buying vs. Renting Scuba Gear

Short answer: buy the gear that touches your face and body first (mask, snorkel, fins, boots, and usually a wetsuit). Rent the regulator, BCD, and tanks while you're learning or diving a few times a year. Once you're diving regularly, owning your regulator, BCD, and computer usually pays for itself and makes every dive more comfortable.

Buy these first

  • Mask, snorkel, and fins. Fit matters more than anything else here, and they're the pieces most likely to make or break your comfort. Our Open Water students bring their own.
  • Boots and a wetsuit. For fit and hygiene, most divers own these early.
  • Surface marker buoy (SMB). Inexpensive, important for safety, and required for our Open Water course.

Rent these while you're getting started

  • Regulator and BCD. Renting lets you try different styles before you commit.
  • Tanks and weights. Many divers rent these for years, especially when they travel.

When to buy your regulator, BCD, and computer

Run the numbers. At our shop, a Weekend Diver Kit (regulator, BCD, and two air tanks for two full days) is $55. Divide the price of the setup you're considering by $55, and that's roughly how many weekends it takes to break even. Add annual service: regulator servicing is $30 per stage plus parts. If you dive more than a handful of weekends a year, owning usually comes out ahead.

Price isn't the only reason. Divers who own their gear know exactly how it's set up, which means faster setup, better trim, and more confidence underwater.

Quick answers

Is it worth buying used scuba gear?

It can be, if a technician services it first. A used regulator or BCD with no service history is a gamble. Browse our used gear and ask us about any item's service history.

Should I buy gear before my Open Water course?

Get your mask, snorkel, fins, and SMB fitted before class. Our Open Water course includes the BCD, regulator, wetsuit, dive computer, tanks, and weights, so you can learn before you invest in the big pieces.
